Obituary

Martha Meers Moyer passed away peacefully on April 24, 2020 at the incredible age of 100.

Martha was born on March 7, 1920 in Neosho, Missouri to George Francis and Marvel G. Meers (nee Goff). Her childhood was spent in Joplin, Missouri. As a young child, she loved to explore and wander. Her mother even had to tie her to the porch. This set the stage for a lifetime of independence, travel and adventure. She attended school in Joplin, Missouri. After high school graduation, Martha attended St. John's Hospital School of Nursing in Joplin where she received her nursing degree in 1941. A life-long passion for caring for others followed. Wanting to see the world, Martha joined the U.S. Army Nurses Corp on September 1, 1942. She was assigned to the 42nd Field Hospital where she landed on Utah Beach on D-Day + four. As a surgical nurse, she traveled to Northern France, the Ardennes, the Rhineland and Central Europe, and on January 15, 1946, she was discharged as a Captain. Martha received numerous awards and decorations for her service including in later years the French Legion of Honor Award. After returning from the war, Martha married Robert (Bob) Moyer in Joplin, Missouri on November 14, 1946. The union was blessed with two daughters, Robin and Stephanie. Her husband's job opportunity at Rocketdyne brought the family to McGregor in 1960. Martha was employed as a nurse in the clinic of Drs. Gene and Carroll Robertson. In 1965, Westview Manor Nursing Facility opened and, for the next fifty years, she held many positions including Administrator and Director of Nurses. The Martha Moyer Memory Care Unit was named in her honor. Martha was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, the American Legion, and a founding member of the McGregor Ambulance Association. As a community leader, awards through the years include McGregor Outstanding Citizen Award in 1978, Outstanding Older Worker of Texas in 2007, the Chamber of Commerce's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012, and Community Builder Award from the Masonic Grand Lodge of Texas.
